Freedom of speech is the concept of the inherent human right to voice one’s opinion publicly without fear of censorship or punishment. “Speech” is not limited to public speaking and is generally taken to include other forms of expression. The right is preserved in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is granted formal recognition by the laws of most nations.
“In Singapore, the only freedom of speech that the people enjoy is responsible freedom of speech. Primarily, it probably means that whatever the people say, it should not implicate anyone, especially people of importance. This is probably a necessity because Singapore is a small country and any potential unrest will throw the entire city-state into chaos. “
In the 21st century, it is no longer paper and pen. We are into technology which could replace some of things in our daily life. Communication is a very important factor today. It can be done through internet over at the computer or using their PDA or even their very own cell phone. We will be looking into freedom of speech in the cyber world. The development of the Internet opened new possibilities for achieving freedom of speech using methods that do not depend on legal measures. Pseudonymity and data havens allow free speech, as the technology guarantees that material cannot be removed or censored. A gripe site is one of the latest forms of exercising free speech on the Internet. In the cyber world, we can often find various sources in which people post the comments. The main sources with be blogging.
A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order.
Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.
Other sources will from the news. One of the examples is The Strait Times. People can go into the strait time to type in their views in the web page itself. The website is http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/ST%2BForum.html
Another resource is the famous networking tools that most people are using now. Example: Friendster or Facebook. However, for most of the networking tools, it enables users to sign in before expressing their thoughts over in the cyber world.
In this project, we will be focusing on freedom of speech on the blog.
People can blog anything on the blog. It can be racial prejudices, defamation, personal opinion or just simple remarks. However when people blog about all this content, they normally do not know that it is wrong or is too over.
